30 Abominable Comments!

  1. TS Says:

    Neat :)

  2. ramón Says:

well this has gotten very very interesting.

is it me or do the tones look a bit darker as well? foreboding….

  3. imojen Says:

i love the turn this has taken! i just pulled an all nighter writing my term paper on fairytales and their modern usage, and this is so refreshing from just having analyzed all of disney’s abuses.
thank you so much for giving the world charles, it makes wednesdays so much better.

  4. david Says:

oooooohh… is he going to do some voodoo that he do?

  5. Vvicked Says:

I don’t trust the city folk, but I’m not sure I trust the lion, either… He does “menacing” well. :/=

  6. funtime42 Says:

    A quest! I just love Wednesdays…

  7. Tony Says:

wow, i like where this is going (not a clue where it’s going) that’s why i like it.

  8. Nyss Says:

    That lion is getting creepier.

  9. Watcher Says:

This has gotten very interesting, the story is growing but it is still not clear how everything intertwines.

Great artwork, great suspence, keep it up!

  10. Dynamaso Says:

I don’t think the Lion is creepy, just very serious. I am thinking this strip is about to take a dark turn. I can hardly wait to see where it leads.

  11. Mr Paradox Says:

For some reason, I am reminded of Enkil, Gilgamesh’s companion. I guess the city looks like it could be in ancient Sumeria. Anyhow, the storytelling in this work is sublime. Thank you. It should be an interesting journey

  12. katada Says:

anyone else hear the dramatic ” DUHN Duhn duhnnnnnnn…” on the last panel? because i did. loud and clear.

  13. bachterman Says:

chris is going on a quest. neat!

  14. Jackson Says:

@Mr. Paradox, TRUE. The designs could be Sumarian, although with domes that wide, I would say we’re talking about Italy, maybe even Renaissance era. What I love, though, is the QUEST. The three points. Now, I’m Irish, so I’m going back to the tales my Nana used to tell. I know this particular form of storytelling goes back to Scheherazade, but I have to love how this story is turning that format on its ass. In the classic tales, the protagonist acquires the necessary factors through brains and trickery. But CC has only desperation and brute-ass strength. And Bravado.

  15. Lun-Sei Sleidee Says:

I smell “Mononoke Hime” meets “Tonari no Totoro”!

  16. Vashra Says:

    Rumplestiltzkin!

  17. Lee Says:

    likin’ the loads :)

  18. Chip Says:

Wonderful new turn. I feel like a wide-eyed kid. Seriously. Thank you for the Awe.

  19. Vo0Ds Says:

Hi, i just found your comic today through ramons site (BNS) i read alot of web comics and yours is absolutely beautiful with really compelling characters and an intriguing story :) I just finished uni for the summer and ur comic just sums up my awesome mood :D

  20. Esn Says:

Hey, what happened to the skyscrapers in the city the last time you showed it, a few panels back?

That much smog wouldn’t have been emitting from an “old” city, I think, so I assumed that the story’s in the modern time period.

  21. Mr. Spiral Says:

    Is it just me, or…?

How can Charles bring back the King’s name if he can’t speak?

I know, I know, I’ll shut now, I just notice these things.

ps. are people going to be disappointed when Karl finally gives the little fox a name and it turns out not to be “Bravado”?

  22. bethany Says:

The Three Billy Goats Gruff kicks ass!

  23. Phy Says:

Great stuff. I feel like there’s more than a hint of cinematic mafia don in the lion.

  24. mac Says:

That lion is obviously magic of some sort. I’m sure he’ll figure that out. Also, the fox will always be called bravado. It’ll be a way to tell new readers. they’ll know his “real” name, assuming it’s not Bravado.

  25. ledaeth Says:

oh no! this strip is actually going somewhere!!
I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. loved the randomness…

  26. JustLuke Says:

Well so far we’ve had no reason to believe Charles can understand anything anyone has said to him, have we? He didn’t understand the bee, and he’s not actually responded to anybody… Maybe he just likes listening to Mr Lion, lol.

    P.S. let’s hope the human king isn’t bald…

  27. Niroot Says:

I just love the strong fairy tale motifs you’ve added in those three requests. The last is particularly resonant. A name in fairy lore is so powerful…

  28. tiggertoo Says:

Hmmm, somehow I think that’s three more things than Charles can actually remember, assuming he can actually understand the lion. Maybe his little fox friend can help (though Bravado seems to have all the attention span of a pair of puppies)..

  29. Sihaya Says:

That looks exactly like the Hagia Sophia to me, and the city’s location near the water backs that up (but near the mountains?. If Istanbul is ruled by a King, but we’re in the age of the railcar, then that narrows the date of the story quite a bit, as the Ottoman Empire came to an end in 1922.

But that’s a guess, as the Hagia Sophia has been copied a few times in other cities. The game was fun, though.

  30. cathammer Says:

I thought of Istanbul when I saw the picture, too, but I think the story is not necessarily in our when/where.
