O Abominável Charles Christopher
March 24th, 2008
Someone in Brazil has taken it upon him(or her)self to translate my Abominable Charles Christopher strips into Portuguese!!
I kind of wondered as I was working on them how they might be translated - whether the sound effects would work, or whether the characters’ voices would come through. It seems like they do. I don’t read Portuguese, but the tone still seems to be intact.
Anyway, thanks for the effort! I hope Brazilian readers enjoy it. I’ve added an ‘International’ section to the bottom of the sidebar here for easy access. It sure would be cool if I had links to other translations, like French or German.
Yep, it sure would be cool… ;)
UPDATE: Kenneth has already put up a Danish translation! I’ve added a link on the right. You guys are amazing.

Well I don’t speak German that good nor French - but I could do a Danish translation? :)

I’d be quite interested in making a French version. Could you give details on which fonts you use? Or is that done entirely manually?

Danish would be awesome! And Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, etc. I just think it would be great for international readers to be able to enjoy the strip.
I’m not sure how to do this, actually. Abominable Brasil seems to have just set up a simple Blogger.com site and grabbed the strips from here, which is fine with me. He even got the font right, or at least very close! I use a Comicraft font called ‘WildandCrazy’, but there are a lot of freeware fonts that look pretty similar. Blambot.com is a good resource.

I’m rather interested in translating it into Esperanto. That’d open Charles up to quite a range of people from different cultures. :)
I’m still studying, though, so it’ll likely be a couple months yet before I feel I’ll be proficient enough to translate the tone accurately, but this is certainly now on my agenda.

What is the font used to do the word “Abominable”? I seem to recall having it somewhere but it would be easier to locate if I had a name to go by :D
Just thinking that diplaying the title of the comic in translated alongside the original would go over well in the header :)

Hi Kenneth.
The fonts used in the ‘Abominable’ title are ‘Zombie’ and ‘Chattery Teeth’.

Ok - it’s going to take awhile to translate all the comic strips, but the work is in progress now :)

That’s amazing Kenneth! I just added a flag link for ‘Abominable Denmark’ to the sidebar.
Thanks so much for the effort!

No problem Karl - I love this comic and if this gets a few more people to read it, it’s well worth my time :)
I’m up to Episode 4 now, with sound effects and everything - didn’t have just the font you used, so I substituted for the ComicCrazy from ComicCraft that I did have :)

I know someone who could translate into German easily. Her name is Claudia. I’ll ask her AS SOON AS YOU GIVE ME BACK MY GOD OF WAR 2!!!!!

I’ll be back in town for the Toronto Con in early April, ROB! I’ll get your precious game back to you then!
Sorry that you all had to witness this ugly business. Rob and I are usually very affectionate.

Well for some reason Google seems to think I’m in violation of their service agreement - but of course there is no way of contacting them to rectify this or even get an explanation as to why :(

Continuarei lendo a tira em inglês, aqui mesmo. Abraços!

Damn, Kenneth, that stinks… maybe you should add a note in big letters on the side that you have the original creator’s support?

Can’t do anything - it will be reviewed within 4 business days I’m told - until then I am completely locked out. Apparently whatever security measures Google has in place tags too much posting activity as spam, so this is the reason rather than violation of IP …. at least from what I can tell.
Oh well - guess I can just work along on the translations until this clears out.

We ought to do a Quebec version.

It looks like the Danish translation has been found to be “violating Blogger’s Terms of Service” and has been shut down…

I have requested an update from Google on this, but I expect I might have to move the translation to another service provider, since Blogger.com are hardly taking their own terms and information on time-to-review seriously.
Too bad really - I have all the current strips translated and ready :/

Yey! The heavy hand of Google has been lifted and I am uploading new translations right now :D
